A virus has attacked my computer and it sent some emails using my account. Some of them was sent to my own blogs using 'post by email' freature, titled 'Please I Need Your Help'. As a result, I got many complains for something I didn't do.

Anyway, I apologize for those who has received those spams and I should tell you I didn't send you email at all. Even I could't log in to my own blog using my gmail account now.

How are you doing today? I am sorry i didn't inform you about my traveling to Africa for a program called "Empowering Youth to Fight Racism, HIV/AIDS, Poverty and Lack of Education, the program is taking place in three major countries in Africa which is Ghana , South Africa and Nigeria . It as been a very sad and bad moment for me, the present condition that i found myself is very hard for me to explain.

I am really stranded in Nigeria because I forgot my little bag in the Taxi where my money, passport, documents and other valuable things were kept on my way to the Hotel am staying, I am facing a hard time here because i have no money on me. I am now owning a hotel bill of $ 1550 and they wanted me to pay the bill soon else they will have to seize my bag and hand me over to the Hotel Management., I need this help from you urgently to help me back home, I need you to help me with the hotel bill and i will also need $1600 to feed and help myself back home so please can you help me with a sum of $3500 to sort out my problems here? I need this help so much and on time because i am in a terrible and tight situation here, I don't even have money to feed myself for a day which means i had been starving so please understand how urgent i needed your help.

Concerts - Beatles At Shea Stadium

In this article we're going to review one of the most famous concerts in rock and roll history, The Beatles performance at Shea Stadium.

The Beatles are arguably the most famous band in rock and roll history. They certainly were the start of the British revolution that spawned many bands with that Brit sound, but none of them sounded quite like the Fab Four.

The Beatles first concert at Shea Stadium in New York set records for the time. The attendance was 55,600 people and the money made was over 57,000 pounds. Not too bad for August 15, 1965. The noise factor at the stadium that day was so loud that John Lennon said it was "louder than God." Lennon had a habit of comparing the Beatles to the almighty, which ultimately got him and the group into a lot of trouble in their early days.

Most people know about the concert date and what was played there, but what few people know is what happened to the Beatles on the way to Shea Stadium. While it was nothing traumatic, it is important to note that in spite of their enormous popularity, they were in total awe of what they were walking into.

On the drive to the stadium, George Harrison was totally in awe of the amount of traffic headed that way. The freeway was a total disaster area. Cars were hardly moving and for a while it looked like the Beatles themselves would be late for their own concert had it not been for the helicopter that took them from Wall Street to the stadium. The view from up above was as if people were trying to escape some sort of national disaster.

They wouldn't allow the Beatles to land in the stadium so they had to land on top of the roof at the World's Fair. From there, it was one hundred yards to the stadium in a Wells Fargo armored truck. Talk about security. On the drive in the truck, which had no windows, to the stadium, insane kids were banging on the outside of the truck and rocking it back and forth. At one point George thought the truck was going to be turned over and they were all going to be torn to pieces. All of this in spite of weeks drawing up plans for how they would get the group to the stadium.

Ironically, the concert, compared to modern times, was very low budget. The amps were Vox Ac-30s. The group was offered to have anything they wanted made for them, but they turned down all offers. They wanted to play with the equipment that they had always used. Consequently, the sound quality was not great. But the experience was one that will probably never be felt by anyone ever again.

For those interested in the music, the highlights of the concert were "A Hard Day's Night", "Help", "I'm Down", "Can't Buy Me Love", "Ticket To Ride", "I Feel Fine", and "Twist And Shout".

The Concert For Bangladesh

The Concert For Bangladesh was held on August 1, 1971, at Madison Square Garden in the greatest city in the world, New York. To the youth of the time it was just another concert. But as history goes, it may very well go down as one of the greatest events in mankind's.

The brains behind the concert was ex Beatle, George Harrison, who had become very much into causes after the group split up. In this case, the cause was the people of Bangladesh, who were literally starving to death. The concert was put on in the hopes of bringing some hope to a dying region of the world.

Bangladesh had a troubled history. The events leading up to this concert are as follows.

In 1969 General Yahya Khan assumed power in Pakistan. His goal was to put an end to end the dictatorship and start a democracy. In December of the following year the League of Bangladesh won a huge victory. It became the largest party in Pakistan. But Kahn was unwilling to allow a power shift to Bangladesh. So the results of the election were ignored and a reign of terror was unleashed in Bangladesh to eliminate the opposition to Kahn. It is estimated that over 1 million people were murdered. This was the greatest atrocity since Hitler and the Jews. The ones who escaped to India suffered terrible starvation, among other things. Thus, the reason for the concert.

It all started with a call that George Harrison made to Ringo Starr, another ex Beatle. He then made another call to Leon Russell. Both agreed to come to the East Coast for the concert. After those calls, others were made to business managers, the Garden itself and everyone and anyone Harrison could think of to be of assistance.

The list of performers were as long as King Kong's right arm. At the top of the list was Eric Clapton, who had played with George Harrison while with the Beatles on tunes like "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," which was played at the concert itself.

Another friend of Harrison's, Billy Preston, who played on the Beatle's big hit "Get Back" was also there. At the concert itself Preston played "That's The Way God Planned It."

A group that was up and coming at the time, Badfinger, was also in attendance. They were supposed to be the next Beatles, actually founded by the Beatles and also on Apple Records. At the concert Badfinger served as a backing band and didn't play any of their original material.

Rounding out the all star cast was the great Bob Dylan, who sang many tunes including his signature tune "Blowin' In The Wind."

The Concert for Bangladesh was not just a concert. It was an event. One that will never be forgotten and one that hopefully will never come again.

Skandal Penjiplakan Lagu "My Sweet Lord"

George Harrison, gitaris The Beatles, pernah diajukan ke pengadilan karena dituduh mencontek hit dia yang paling terkenal, My Sweet Lord, dari singel yang dirilis tahun 1962 di Amerika Serikat, He's So Fine. "Kalau kasus ini ditulis, ia akan menjadi sebuah buku yang tebal," kata Harrison jengkel.

Ceritanya berawal tahun 1962 tatkala He's So Fine, sebuah komposisi yang ditulis Ronald Mack, direkam untuk trio The Chiffons. Secara hukum lagu ini dimiliki oleh by Bright Tunes Music Corporation. Lagu ini menjadi hit nomor satu di AS dan bertengger di Billboard selama lima pekan.

Di Inggris lagu ini pernah mencapai urutan ke-12 tangga lagu per 1 Juni 1963. Di saat yang sama sebuah lagu The Beatles, From Me to You, bertengger di urutan pertama. Harrison kelak mengakui ia cukup familiar dengan lagu He's So Fine tersebut.

Selama tujuh tahun berikutnya He's So Fine tak lebih dari sebuah lagu usang, sementara Harrison mengakhiri kebersamaannya dengan The Beatles untuk memulai karier sebagai artis solo tahun 1970. Bulan Desember 1969 ia sedang tur bersama bandnya, Delaney and Bonnie and Friends di Copenhagen, Denmark. Di pengadilan ia mengatakan, sekitar saat itulah benih My Sweet Lord lahir. Seperti biasa ia bermain-main dengan gitar pada saat senggang dan dari mulutnya keluar kata-kata "hallelujah" dan "hare krishna". Lalu beberapa personel Delaney ikut nimbrung dan Harrison memulai proses penulisan lirik.

Ketika ia kembali ke London (Inggris), salah seorang anggota Delaney, Billy Preston (kibor), sedang mengerjakan sebuah album. Harrison, yang ikut mengawali proses produksinya, menyelesaikan My Sweet Lord menjadi sebuah versi yang sudah jadi. Dan sekalipun banyak artis yang ikut menyumbang saran, Harrison-lah yang menjadi satu-satunya penulis lagu itu.

Akhirnya album itu selesai dan salah satu lagunya adalah My Sweet Lord yang dinyanyikan Preston. Seperti biasa "lead sheet" yang berisikan melodi, lirik, dan harmoni My Sweet Lord dikirimkan ke AS untuk dimintakan hak kopinya. Bukan My Sweet Lord versi Preston itu yang menjadi disengketakan di pengadilan selama dua dekade itu, namun versi yang termuat dalam album All Things Must Pass yang juga dirilis sebagai singel pada 28 November 1970 di AS.

Tanggal 10 Februari 1971 Bright Tunes secara resmi menuntut Harrison dan dua perusahaan miliknya (Harrisongs Music Ltd di AS dan Harrisongs Music Inc di Inggris), Apple Records, BMI, serta Hansen Publications. Manajer Harrison, Allen Klein, langsung menemui pemilik Bright Tunes, Seymour Barash, untuk berunding.

Barang bukti motif

Usulan Klein untuk berdamai di luar pengadilan ditolak Barash. Klein lalu menyewa jasa seorang musikolog, Harold Barlow, untuk memberikan kesaksian yang intinya menyebutkan, tuntutan Bright Tunes tak berdasar. Celakanya, di tengah proses pengadilan itu Klein dipecat sebagai manajer dan Brigh Tunes berganti pemilik.

Sebelum pengadilan dimulai beberapa pekan lagi, pada Januari 1976, Harrison menawarkan uang damai 148.000 dollar AS. Bright Tunes menolak dan menuntut 75 persen dari royalti di seluruh dunia dan hak kepemilikan atas My Sweet Lord. Berhubung kedua pihak berkeras proses pengadilan pun dimulai lagi 23-25 Februari 1976.

Setelah sejumlah kesaksian dari para ahli didengar dan barang-barang bukti diperiksa satu per satu, maka hakim menjatuhkan vonis bahwa Harrison memang menjiplak He's So Fine. Hakim berpegang pada barang bukti yang berupa sekuens "motif A" dari lagu itu yang terdiri dari empat repetisi notasi sol-mi-re, "motif B" (sol-la-do-la-do), dan kombinasi (grace note) di antara kedua motif itu (sol-la-do-la-re-do).

Saksi-saksi ahli berhasil menunjukkan bahwa motif-motif itu merupakan pola yang sangat tidak biasa. Dan komposisi My Sweet Lord terbukti paling tidak menggunakan motif A sebanyak empat kali dan motif B tiga kali. Hakim mengatakan, sekalipun terdapat perbedaan kecil, namun "kedua lagu secara jelas sangat identik." Hakim menambahkan, Harrison bisa saja tak menyadari ia melakukan pencontekan, tetapi itu bukanlah alasan yang legalistis.

Pengadilan menjatuhkan denda dari empat sumber. Pertama dari pelanggaran terhadap "royalti mekanikal" (uang yang dibayarkan label kepada penerbit lagu), royalti penampilan, penjualan, dan dari keuntungan yang diperoleh Apple Records. Hitung punya hitung Harrison dan tertuduh-tertuduh lainnya mesti membayar ke Bright Tunes denda kerugian sekitar 2,1 juta dollar AS ditambah sekitar 1,5 juta dollar AS lainnya untuk denda plagiat atas He's So Fine.

Namun, para tertuduh naik banding dan selama bertahun-tahun kasus ini tak kunjung selesai. Tahun 1991 sidang kasus ini kembali diadakan dan hukuman denda diputuskan mencapai 587.000 dollar AS. Giliran Bright Tunes yang naik banding dan pada April 1993 kedua pihak yang bersengketa menyepakati denda yang tak diumumkan kepada publik. (bas/Kompas 19/01/07)

Beatles First Radio Interview

According to reknown Beatles author Mark Lewisohn, this is the Beatles' first-ever radio interview! Lewisohn accurately describes it as rare and fascinating, not just for historical importance, but also because it's wonderfully intriguing.

At the time of this 1962 interview, the Beatles are still making regular visits to Hamburg, and Ringo Starr is so new to the group that he's still keeping track of how long he's been a Beatle by number of weeks!! This interview takes place following the release of their first single 'Love Me Do,' and BEFORE the final version of 'Please Please Me' had been arrived at. At the time of this interview they have not yet had a 'number one' song. It is a very rare glimpse of the early Beatles-- their first radio interview--recorded on October 28th, 1962 at Hulme Hall in Port Sunlight, on the Wirral in England.

This new group of youngsters is interviewed by Monty Lister, with additional questions from Malcolm Threadgill and Peter Smethurst.

MONTY: It's a very great pleasure for us this evening to say hello to an up-and-coming Merseyside group, The Beatles. I know their names, and I'm going to try and put faces to them. Now, you're John Lennon, aren't you?"

JOHN: "Yes, that's right."

MONTY: "What do you do in the group, John?"

JOHN: "I play harmonica, rhythm guitar, and vocal. That's what they call it."

MONTY: "Then, there's Paul McCartney. That's you?"

PAUL: "Yeah, that's me. Yeah."

MONTY: "And what do you do?"

PAUL: "Play bass guitar and uhh, sing? ...I think! That's what they say."

MONTY: "That's quite apart from being vocal?"

PAUL: "Well... yes, yes."

MONTY: "Then there's George Harrison."

GEORGE: "How d'you do."

MONTY: "How d'you do. What's your job?"

GEORGE: "Uhh, lead guitar and sort of singing."

MONTY: "By playing lead guitar does that mean that you're sort of leader of the group or are you...?"

GEORGE: "No, no. Just... Well you see, the other guitar is the rhythm. Ching, ching, ching, you see."

PAUL: "He's solo guitar, you see. John is in fact the leader of the group."

MONTY: "And over in the background, here, and also in the background of the group making alot of noise is Ringo Starr."

RINGO: "Hello."

MONTY: "You're new to the group, aren't you Ringo?"

RINGO: "Yes, umm, nine weeks now."

MONTY: "Were you in on the act when the recording was made of 'Love Me Do'?"

RINGO: "Yes, I'm on the record. I'm on the disc."

(the group giggles)

RINGO: (comic voice) "It's down on record, you know?"

MONTY: "Now, umm..."

RINGO: "I'm the drummer!"

(laughter)

MONTY: "What's that offensive weapon you've got there? Those are your drumsticks?"

RINGO: "Well, it's umm... just a pair of sticks I found. I just bought 'em, you know, 'cuz we're going away."

MONTY: "When you say you're going away, that leads us on to another question now. Where are you going?"

RINGO: "Germany. Hamburg. For two weeks."

MONTY: "You have standing and great engagements over there, haven't you?"

RINGO: "Well, the boys have been there quite alot, you know. And I've been there with other groups, but this is the first time I've been there with the Beatles."

MONTY: "Paul, tell us. How do you get in on the act in Germany?"

PAUL: "Well, it was all through an old agent."

(laughter)

PAUL: (chuckles) "We first went there for a fella who used to manage us, and Mr. Allan Williams of the Jacaranda Club in Liverpool. And he found the engagements so we sort of went there, and then went under our own..."

JOHN: "Steam."

PAUL: "Steam... (laughs)

JOHN: "...as they say."

PAUL: "As they say, afterwards, you know. And we've just been going backwards and forwards and backwards and forwards."

MONTY: (surprised) "You're not busy at all?"

PAUL: "Well yes, actually. Yes. It's been left-leg in all the war."

(laughter)

MONTY: "George, were you brought up in Liverpool?"

GEORGE: "Yes. So far, yes."

MONTY: "Whereabouts?"

GEORGE: "Well, born in Wavertree, and bred in Wavertree and Speke-- where the airplanes are, you know."

MONTY: "Are you all 'Liverpool types,' then?"

RINGO: "Yes."

JOHN: "Uhh... types, yes."

PAUL: "Oh yeah."

RINGO: "Liverpool-typed Paul, there."

MONTY: "Now, I'm told that you were actually in the same form as young Ron Wycherley..."

RINGO: "Ronald. Yes."

MONTY: "...now Billy Fury."

RINGO: "In Saint Sylus."

MONTY: "In which?"

RINGO: "Saint Sylus."

JOHN: "Really?"

RINGO: "It wasn't Dingle Bay like you said in the Musical Express."

PAUL: "No, that was wrong. Saint Sylus school."

MONTY: "Now I'd like to introduce a young disc jockey. His name is Malcolm Threadgill, he's 16-years old, and I'm sure he'd like to ask some questions from the teenage point of view."

MALCOLM: "I understand you've made other recordings before on a German label."

PAUL: "Yeah."

MALCOLM: "What ones were they?"

PAUL: "Well, we didn't make... First of all we made a recording with a fella called Tony Sheridan. We were working in a club called 'The Top Ten Club' in Hamburg. And we made a recording with him called, 'My Bonnie,' which got to number five in the German Hit Parade."

JOHN: "Ach tung!"

PAUL: (giggles) "But it didn't do a thing over here, you know. It wasn't a very good record, but the Germans must've liked it a bit. And we did an instrumental which was released in France on an EP of Tony Sheridan's, which George and John wrote themselves. That wasn't released here. It got one copy. That's all, you know. It didn't do anything."

MALCOLM: "You composed 'P.S. I Love You' and 'Love Me Do' yourself, didn't you? Who does the composing between you?"

PAUL: "Well, it's John and I. We write the songs between us. It's, you know... We've sort of signed contracts and things to say, that now if we..."

JOHN: "It's equal shares."

PAUL: "Yeah, equal shares and royalties and things, so that really we just both write most of the stuff. George did write this instrumental, as we say. But mainly it's John and I. We've written over about a hundred songs but we don't use half of them, you know. We just happened to sort of rearrange 'Love Me Do' and played it to the recording people, and 'P.S. I Love You,' and uhh, they seemed to quite like it. So that's what we recorded."

MALCOLM: "Is there anymore of your own compositions you intend to record?"

JOHN: "Well, we did record another song of our own when we were down there, but it wasn't finished enough. So, you know, we'll take it back next time and see how they like it then."

(long pause)

JOHN: (jokingly) "Well... that's all from MY end!"

(laughter)

MONTY: "I would like to just ask you-- and we're recording this at Hume Hall, Port Sunlight-- Did any of you come over to this side before you became famous, as it were? Do you know this district?"

PAUL: "Well, we played here, uhh... I don't know what you mean by famous, you know.

(laughter)

PAUL: "If being famous is being in the Hit Parade, we've been over here-- we were here about two months ago. Been here twice, haven't we?"

JOHN: "I've got relations here. Rockferry."

MONTY: "Have you?"

JOHN: "Yes. Oh, all sides of the water, you know."

PAUL: "Yeah, I've got a relation in Clorton Village-- Upton Road."

RINGO: (jokingly) "I've got a friend in Birkenhead!"

(laughter)

MONTY: "I wish I had."

GEORGE: (jokingly) "I know a man in Chester!"

(laughter)

MONTY: "Now, that's a very dangerous thing to say. There's a mental home there, mate. Peter Smethurst is here as well, and he looks like he is bursting with a question."

PETER: "There is just one question I'd like to ask. I'm sure it's the question everyone's asking. I'd like your impressions on your first appearence on television."

PAUL: "Well, strangely enough, we thought we were gonna be dead nervous. And everyone said, 'You suddenly, when you see the cameras, you realize that there are two million people watching,' because there were two million watching that 'People And Places' that we did... we heard afterwards. But, strangely enough, it didn't come to us. We didn't think at all about that. And it was much easier doing the television than it was doing the (live musical performance) radio. It's still nerve-wracking, but it was a bit easier than doing radio because there was a full audience for the radio broadcast."

MONTY: "Do you find it nerve-wracking doing this now?"

(laughter)

PAUL: (jokingly) "Yeah, yeah."

MONTY: "Over at Cleaver Hospital, a certain record on Parlophone-- the top side has been requested. So perhaps the Beatles themselves would like to tell them what it's going to be."

PAUL: "Yeah. Well, I think it's gonna be 'Love Me Do.'"

JOHN: "Parlophone R4949."

(laughter)

PAUL: "'Love Me Do.'"

MONTY: "And I'm sure, for them, the answer is P.S. I love you!"

PAUL: "Yeah."

The Beatles and Epiphone Guitars

The Beatles may well be arguably the worlds biggest ever band. Musically from the early 1960s to the end of their career they covered an array of different music styles from the jangly pop of their early days to the psychedelia of their latter albums. To cover all these different sounds they needed a broad range of instruments.

Throughout their career they used a variety of guitars and you can see many photographs of the Beatles with Rickenbackers (325s in particular) various Gretch, Fender and Hofner. However they are also linked with Epiphone Guitars and often choose Epiphone guitars over all other guitars for recordings and live performances.

The first Beatle to own an Epiphone guitar was Paul McCartney who bought his first, an Epiphone Casino,during 1964. Influenced by the sound of this guitar John and George bought theirs soon after. The Epiphone Casino is a hollow-body double cutaway electric guitar. Although available in a variety of colors, George Harrison stripped his down to bare wood saying that he liked the sound of the guitar being able to breathe.

John Lennon favored the Epiphone E230TD Casino and used a variety of these guitars from 1966 onwards. Lennon painted this guitar and it appeared during the White Album sessions and in the Film Let it Be. During that film Lennon can be seen playing his Casino while rehearsing new material. Lennons Casino also features during the celebrated performance on the London roof top of their office building. Lennon is synonymous with the Casino, so much so that Epiphone recently re-released a John Lennon signature Casino. This faithful reproduction is of the guitar as John originally purchased it with the vintage sunburst finish and stock hardware.

The Beatles also used Epiphones acoustic guitars. Paul McCartney favored the Epiphone Texan acoustic guitar and it was used to record the epic track Yesterday. McCartney still uses Texan's to this day.

Clearly the Beatles have been one of the (if not the) biggest influences in popular music over the last 50 years. Their sound was distinct and this was bought about both by their playing and their selection of instruments. Thier Epiphone guitars contributed to their sound and a number of guitars have become iconic in their association with arguably the worlds biggest band.

JOHN LENNON - The Man and His Times

John Lennon wasn't always my favorite Beatle; at first it was Paul. But gradually, over a period of time, it was John Lennon who won my heart. I think the transition began sometime during the latter part of the 1960s. Back then, it seemed to my young mind, that the world was falling apart. Revolution and anarchy were on the doorstep. John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy had each been assassinated, riots were springing up all over the south, Watts was burning and the war in Viet Nam was escalating. Out of the turmoil a growing hunger was born among many of my generation, including myself, for truth and peace.

During this period I had one brother who was fighting in the jungles of Viet Nam and another who had recently returned from overseas. I can remember taking part in some of the protests at my school, which consisted of "sit-ins", walking out of class, and wearing black arm bands in recognition of the soldiers who had died. The Peace Movement became very important to me and my hero in this effort was John Lennon. John and Yoko were staging several protests in hopes of raising public awareness and support for peace in Viet Nam, as well as other human rights issues they cared about. I followed there activities with great interest and gave what I could to their cause. So you can imagine how strange it seemed after all those years, to find myself standing in the boyhood home of John Lennon, quietly paging through a book which he had written.

It was the summer of 2003 and my husband and I were on an extended honeymoon in Britain. Two years earlier he had met a woman whose husband had gone to school with John Lennon. When she learned that we were planning a trip to England, she offered to give us a private tour of the Beatles' stomping grounds. Through a mysterious set of circumstances we were able to visit the home where John Lennon lived as a boy, as well as each of the other Beatles' homes in Liverpool. We also went to The Cavern, where the Beatles often played prior to being "discovered" by Brian Epstein, and Abbey Road Studios in London, where they produced their last album.

John Lennon was born "John Winston Lennon" October 9, 1940 in Liverpool, England. His parents, Fred and Julia Lennon, divorced when he was about four or five years old, leaving him to be raised by his Aunt Mimi and Uncle George. John never saw his father again (except for one very brief episode in 1964), but Julia continued to make sporadic visits from time to time. As a little boy, John would sometimes hide when his mother Julia came to see him, because the emotional pain was too much for him to bear. Though his Aunt Mimi and Uncle George did their best to provide a good home, John always felt abandoned and unloved. He became angry and rebellious as a result and gained a reputation as a bully or "Teddy-Boy". Then one day he heard a new kind of music on the radio, called Rock and Roll, and his life was changed forever. From that point forward all he wanted to do was learn how to play the guitar.

Well, as they say, the rest is history. The Beatles soon emerged and later took the world by storm in 1964 when they appeared on the Ed Sullivan show. Their first American single "I Want to Hold Your Hand" was released and distributed through a small record label in December of the previous year, and by January it had leaped to number one. The song had sold 1.5 million copies within five days and was expected to reach two million in another month. This was an unprecedented phenomenon in the recording industry at the time when a hit song usually reached it's peak in sales at 200,000. Now all the other "big" record companies that had originally scoffed at them, were kicking themselves in the you know what for being so blind to the Beatles unique sound and charisma. Since then, the Beatles and their music have exceeded more than three decades of fame and popularity.

John Lennon was, himself, a very gifted writer, songwriter and poet. To this day, the "Songwriting Techniques of John Lennon; The Beatle Years" is one of the most popular classes offered at California's Berklee School of Music. His lyrics could be abstract and difficult to understand, or extremely simple and straightforward, often providing a rich spectrum of color and creativity through the use of metaphor and simile. John had a keen mind, quick wit and sharp tongue. It seemed as if he was always searching for something just beyond his reach, something to fill the emptiness and give meaning to his life. Happiness had somehow eluded him until he met Yoko Ono, after which he became completely disenchanted with the Beatles, and announced that he was leaving the group for good. "I want a divorce" he told Paul, and the Beatles were formally dissolved by January of 1971, each going their separate ways.

On December 8, 1980, John Lennon was shot dead on the streets of Manhatten, New York, just outside his home, by a lone gunman named Mark Chapman. Chapman later signed a statement for the police saying "I never wanted to hurt anybody. My friends will tell you that. I have two parts in me. The big part is very kind; the children I worked with will tell you that. I have a small part in me that cannot understand the world and what goes on in it. I did not want to kill anybody and I really don't know why I did it..."

I don't know why it still seems so ironic and hard to believe that John Lennon was murdered. Maybe it's because he had come to represent a message of hope and peace for my generation. John had developed a social conciousness that was not unlike others who had gone before him; men like John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy. None of these men were perfect, but they were all influential in making us aware of the larger picture. They pointed out the need for change and the importance of developing new ideas. They knew how to draw us in close and inspire us to dream, to imagine, and to pursue doing whatever we can to help establish a better world.

What's the new Mary Jane Attempted by some of the Beatles 14 August 1968, with more added to the same recording 26 November 1969. Came close to being a Plastic Ono Band single with "You know my name". John lead vocals. A specially edited version is on the CD "Anthology 3".

Etcetera Demo made by Paul at EMI, 20 August 1968, and taken away. No version has come out, including bootlegs.

Teddy boy (McCartney) A Beatles rehearsal version of 24 January 1969 was on the "Get Back" album compiled in May 1969. Paul recorded it on his first album.

All things must pass (Harrison) George recorded a demo of the complete song in February 1969, which is on the CD "Anthology 3". The Beatles had tried it in January but never got back to it. George of course recorded it in 1971.

Entah kapan tepatnya para remaja atau musikus rock Barat mulai melawat ke Timur guna mempelajari agama, budaya, musik, dan tentunya juga filsafatnya.
Namun yang jelas, paroh kedua tahun 60-an, budaya Timur mulai digandrungi remaja Barat yang ujung-ujungnya berimbas pada para musisi rocknya ketika menulis lirik mereka.

Suatu ketika dua pentolan The Beatles, John Lennon dan George Harrison, diundang menjadi nara sumber suatu acara populer berjudul The Frost Report (digawangi presenter kenamaan David Frost), yang membahas tentang Trancendental Meditation. Di antara yang diundang itu, adalah Juan Mascaro, seorang sarjana Sansekerta, profesor di Cambridge. Orang ini memberikan George sebuah buku rangkuman yang ditulisnya, berjudul The Lamps of Fire (1958), yang berisi kata-kata bijak ajaran Tao (dengan nabinya Lao Tse), Tao Te Ching; dan berharap agar George mau menulisnya dalam bentuk lagu. Maka muncullah lagu Beatles berjudul: The Inner Light (1967) yang dijadikan muka B dari single hit The Beatles, "Lady Madonna". Tidak tanggung-tanggung, bahkan bentuk musiknya pun kecuali liriknya yang Inggris, semuanya bernuansa India.

Sebelumnya, John, anggota Beatles yang dikenal bengal, mempelajari karya Timur tadi lewat jalan yang lain. Adalah "nabi" yang mempopulerkan LSD di Amerika, Timothy Leary, yang menulis The Psychedelic Experience (1964) sebuah karya puitik yang isinya mengambil dari buku Budhisme Tibet kuno, "Book of the Death", mengungkap tentang kematian ego, bukan raga. Baris-baris ajaran Tibet itulah yang kemudian dicuplik oleh John dalam lagunya yang sangat revolusioner, bahkan juga judulnya (oleh Ringo, anggota Beatles yang lain), "Tomorrow Never Knows" (album "Revolver", 1966)

Agaknya motivasi George untuk menulis lirik Timur di atas terinspirasi oleh Syd Barret, si penulis lirik Pink Floyd, juga band Inggris, yang mencuplik Bab Duapuluh Tujuh (Fu, perubahan/sukses) dari kitab I Ching (Book of Change, yang telah berusia 5000 tahun, terjemahan Richard Wilhelm, 1924) dan dimasukkan di album perdana mereka "The Piper At The Gates of Dawn" (1966), dengan judul "Chapter 27". Ketika kemudian peran Syd Barret digantikan oleh Roger Waters, Roger mencomot baris-baris puisi kitab kuno Cina periode zaman Tang, terjemahan Arthur Whaley, dalam lagunya, "Set The Controls For The Heart of The Sun" (album "A Saucerful of Secrets", 1968).

Contoh lain tentang kegandrungan seniman rock atas dunia Timur (baik karena pengaruh LSD atau bukan), bahwa ketika dedengkot dan vokalis band Yes, Jon Anderson, sedang main di Jepang, dia sempat membaca "Autobiography of Yogi" karangan Parahamsa Yogananda yang penuh dengan ajaran-ajaran Timur. Terinspirasi oleh isi buku itu, 8 bulan kemudian album "Tales From Topographic Oceans" (1973), sebuah double album sepanjang 80 menit yang hanya berisi 4 lagu saja, muncullah. (gono)

This is the morass of any project attempting to list unreleased Beatles songs. Firstly, do you want to call rehearsals and partial, off-the-cuff renditions Beatles versions? And then there's the problem that more Get Back stuff is still leaking out, and who can keep up with it. But I'll toss out a few lists of songs more or less performed. I'll skip the fact that much of "Abbey Road" appears here too. For much more detail, see the book "Drugs, Divorce and a Slipping Image".

Pada usia 22 tahun, ketika pertamakali bergabung dengan The Beatles, secara lahiriah tidak nampak talenta yang bakal membuatnya menjadi penabuh drum, seorang bintang di kemudian hari. Apalagi dengan perawakan pendek, kurus, bermata sayu dan tak bisa bergaya, ditambah latar belakang kehidupannya yang penuh horror serta sejumlah bayangan nasib sial, Ringo memperlihatkan sosok yang jauh dari meyakinkan.

Dilahirkan 7 Juli 1940 dengan nama Richard Starkey, ia adalah putra tukang roti Richard Starkey Sr. dan Elsie Gleave, yang dibesarkan di daerah slum yang dikenal dengan nama Cast Iron Shore. Ayahnya minggat dari keluarga ketika ia baru berusia 3 tahun dan setelah itu hanya sempat melihat lagi wajah ayahnya 3 kali. Starkey Senior memang masih mengirim 30 shilling per minggu sebagai tunjangan keluarga, namun beberapa bulan kemudian, tunjangan ini tidak muncul-muncul lagi.

Elsie, ibunya, tidak mampu lagi membayar sewa flat, sehingga terpaksa harus bekerja sebagai pelayan bar. Praktis Ringo kecil harus ditinggal sendirian hampir sepanjang malam. Pada usia 6 tahun Ringo mulai terserang migren berkepanjangan. Ketika sakitnya menjadi tidak tertahankan, ia dibawa ke rumah sakit dengan ambulans. Namun terlambat, migrennya tidak sembuh, dan yang lebih buruk lagi, apendiksnya pecah.

Sepuluh minggu ia berada dalam keadaan koma. Ditambah pelbagai komplikasi, termasuk jatuh dari tempat tidur rumah sakit, ia hampir setahun penuh berada di rumah sakit. Ketika saatnya kembali ke bangku sekolah Ringo begitu jauh ketinggalan dan tidak bisa membaca. Dengan susah payah ia mencoba mengejar ketinggalannya atas bantuan teman-teman yang bersimpati kepadanya.

Pada awal 1956, ia mulai menjadi pemain drum untuk band rumah sakit. dan seperti kebanyakan anak muda Liverpool pada waktu itu, ia kemudian mebentuk grup sendiri bersama teman-teman dekatnya. Pada 1959 ia mulai menjadi drummer profesional, dan segera bergabung dengan sejumlah grup musik terbesar di Liverpool, antara lain Rory Storm and The Hurricanes. Popularitasnya di Rory Storm itulah yang membuatnya mengambil nama Ringo.

Nama ini pun masih ada kaitan dengan banyaknya cincin yang melekat di jari-jarinya. lalu nama Starr, dan bukannya Starkey, hanya sekedar memudahkan pengucapan saja, karena tiap-tiap pengumuman untuk solo drum ketika manggung bersama bandnya selalu disebutkan sebagai 'Starr Time'.

Anggota The Beatles lain saat itu mulai memperhatikan kemajuan anak ini dengan cermat. Maka atas prakarsa Lennon, ia dimasukkan ke dalam anggota kelompoknya sebagai penabuh drum. Dalam masa percobaan itu, ia digaji 25 poundsterling per minggu. Jika semuanya lancar, ia akan menjadi anggota penuh.

Pada 12 September 1962, George Martin merasa kaget, ketika anggota The Beatles datang ke studio dengan membawa serta Ringo Starr. Ketika itu di studio sudah ada drummer lain, Andy White. Martin meminta Ringo melakukan beberapa kali uji coba. Setelah mendengarnya, Martin memutuskan bahwa mereka akan jalan terus dengan Andy White tetap sebagai drummer, sementara Ringo hanya disuruh memegang tambourine. Sebuah awal yang kurang enak! Namun dengan tetap mencambuk dirinya untuk terus berlatih.

Reperkusinya semakin membaik dan akhirnya ia menjadi drummer andalan seperti yang kita kenal sekarang. Di bidang hubungan antar anggota, Ringo-lah yang selalu menjadi mediatornya. Maka ketika ia, Paul dan John bersitegang tentang album siapa yang harus diluncurkan terlebih dahulu pada April 1970, Ringo menjadi mediator yang baik dengan memberi konsesi yang memuaskan Paul.

Bersamaan dengan prestasi dan popularitas, ia kini tidak merasa kurang dan tidak ragu lagi untuk terjun dalam bidang yang sudah dinantinya: Cinta! Rasa malu yang mengental selama ini segera mundur untuk memberi tempat kepada rasa percaya diri. Agar jangan terlalu lama 'kosong', Ringo segera menangkap burung dara kecil lain, dan yang kena kali ini adalah Maureen Cox. Perkenalan mereka terasa agak lucu juga.

Ringo melihatnya dari dalam mobilnya Ford Zodiac. Ringo tersenyum malu-malu, sementar Maureen membalasnya dengan senyum menggebu-gebu dan matanya yang hitam besar bersinar cemerlang. Dalam enam bulan berikutnya kencan mereka semakin gencar, dan Maureen selalu diantar kembali tepat seperti maunya aturan, 10 menit menjelang tengah malam. Ringo seakan harus berhitung dengan cermat agar tidak sedetik pun waktu yang terbuang percuma.

Perkawinan dengan seorang Beatles sedikitnya masih dianggap tabu Liverpool kala itu, dan Maureen tidak mau 'dikeroyok' gadis-gadis lain. Maureen masih berharap, suatu saat situasi akan berubah. Maka ketika beredar rumor bahwa Lennon diam-diam telah menikah, ia pun menanyakan hal ini kepada Ringo."Jika itu betul'" jawab Ringo,"kita tidak akan membicarakannya."

Adalah beban berat bagi Maureen untuk bersaing dengan semua bom sex lain yang terus saja merasa ikut memiliki Ringo.Karena itu, seperti para gadis wilayah utara lainnya, Maureen mengeluarkan jurus pamungkas, semacam salto mortale menurut masyarakat Romawi Kuno, yaitu mencari akal supaya dirinya dihamili Ringo. Dan berhasil! Pada pertengahan Januari 1965, ia memberitahukan Ringo bahwa dirinya hamil. Ringo, seperti halnya pejantan sejati dari utara, menjadi lebih sering membawanya ke tengah para sahabatnya. Pada 11 Februari 1965, keduanya menikah dalam suatu upacara seremonial yang cukup mengesankan.

Pada tahun 1965 Ringo menjadi ayah setelah Maureen melahirkan putranya Zak. Demi kepentingan bayinya, ia membeli sebuah rumah di Waybridge seharga 37 ribu poundsterling, di seberang rumah John. Sunny Heights, begitu ia menyebut rumahnya, direnovasi seharga 40 ribu pound. Rumah ini kemudian dilengkapi dengan 6 TV, sistem stereo antar kamar, lebih dari 20 sambungan telepon, termasuk sebuah hotline dengan kantor Brian, dan segala macam remote control yang bisa ditemukan di pasaran pada waktu itu.

Kehidupan rumah tangganya mengalir tenang, sampai datang badai yang menerpanya ketika George dan Pattie datang mengunjunginya. Saat itu, hubungan George dan Pattie sudah tidak harmonis lagi karena George sudah mengalami metamorfosa menjadi Don Juan yang siap menyetubuhi wanita mana saja yang lewat di depan hidungnya.

Begitulah ketika dua keluarga ini makan malam bersama sambil minum anggur, mata George tak pernah lepas dari Maureen, istri Ringo. George lalu mengambil gitar dan memainkan lagu-lagu cinta. Namun tiba-tiba ia melepaskan gitarnya, langsung berlari mendekap Maureen dan menyatakan bahwa ia telah jatuh cinta kepadanya. Semua kaget bukan alang kepalang. Maureen menjadi merah padam dan terus menggelengkan kepalanya, Pattie lalu meledak tangisnya dan mengunci diri di kamar mandi.

Pada malam itu juga George dan pasangannya kembali ke rumah mereka. Namun simfoni kehidupan bernada minor ini belum usai. Beberapa minggu kemudian ketika Pattie kembali ke rumahnya di Friar Park sepulang belanja di London, ia menemukan George dan Maureen di kamar tidurnya, sama seperti Cynthia menemukan John di pelukan Yoko Ono. Mengapa ia sampai nekat meniduri Maureen yang notabene adalah istri sahabatnya selama 10 tahun, merupakan misteri yang tidak terjelaskan hingga kini.

Atas peristiwa memalukan ini, Ringo menceraikan Maureen pada tahun 1975, dan wanita malang itu benar-benar merasa kehilangan pegangan. Ringo memberinya uang cerai 500 ribu poundsterling ditambah berbagai tunjangan. Beberapa waktu kemudian, ketika Maureen ingin tinggal di London, Ringo membelikannya rumah seharga 250 ribu poundsterling di Little Venice.

Enam tahun kemudian, tepatnya 27 April 1981, Ringo baru menikah lagi dengan seorang wanita bernama Barbara. Peristiwa ini menjadi semacam reuni karena Paul dan George turut hadir dengan istri mereka masing-masing. Hanya John saja yang tidak bisa hadir karena sudah meninggal beberapa bulan sebelumnya. Jeda selama enam tahun ini bisa jadi menjadi petunjuk kuat bagi Maureen bahwa ia cukup berharga bagi Ringo untuk dilupakan begitu saja.

George Harrison dijuluki sebagai 'the quiet Beatle' (si Beatle yang pendiam). Dilihat dari kemampuan bermusiknya, sebenarnya George bisa disetarakan dengan John dan Paul, bahkan melebihi mereka. Lebih dari itu, banyak yang menganggap George sebagai salah satu pemain gitar terbaik di dunia. Tapi karena George jarang menonjolkan diri seperti John dan Paul (mungkin karena ia adalah personel Beatles yang termuda), namanya tenggelam di bawah bayang-bayang John dan Paul.

Berbeda dari The Beatles yang lain, ia merupakan satu-satunya anggota grup yang di masa kecilnya tidak dilanda mimpi buruk akibat perceraian orang tuanya. George Harold Harrison lahir pada tanggal 24 Februari 1943 (sumber lain mengatakan, George lahir tanggal 24 Februari 1943 jam 23:42). Ayahnya, Harold, adalah seorang sopir bus kota dan ibunya, Louise Harrison adalah seorang ibu rumah tangga biasa. Sejak kecil George mulai kenal musik karena keluarganya sering mendengarkan musik dari siaran radio. Selain itu, orang tuanya banyak memiliki koleksi lagu-lagu pada masa itu, misalnya Bing Crosby, Shenanaggy Da, dan sebagainya.

Ia sekolah di Liverpool Institute, satu sekolah dengan Paul, tapi satu angkatan di bawahnya. Sekitar tahun 1956/ 1957, George terserang penyakit radang ginjal dan diopname di Alder Hey Hospital selama 6 minggu. Ketika sakit, ia sering ngidam minta gitar. Akhirnya pada awal tahun 1957, ibunya membelikannya gitar seharga 3 poundsterling. Dengan gitar itu, ia ngamen dan mengumpulkan uang untuk membeli gitar baru. Namun karena jumlahnya masih kurang, ia terpaksa harus bekerja di sore hari membantu tukang jagal dan membersihkan rumah orang pada hari Sabtu..

Seperti John dan Paul, George juga menggandrungi rock and roll. George mengidolakan orang-orang seperti Elvis, Carl Perkins, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Little Richard dan Lonnie Donegan. George juga menyukai musik hillbilly seperti 'Nothin' Shakin' dan 'Glad All Over', dan lagu-lagu yang bernuansa humor seperti 'Three Cool Cats' dan 'The Shiek Of Araby'. Sejak bergabung dengan The Quarrymen, George mendapat peran sebagai pemain lead guitar utama. Karena George tidak terlalu mahir berimprovisasi, ia biasanya membuat bagian solo gitar suatu lagu dengan cara mengulik lalu menghapal. Karena itu, pada masa-masa awal The Beatles, banyak lagu yang bagian solo gitarnya begitu-begitu saja setiap kali The Beatles memainkan lagu tersebut. Contohnya: 'All My Loving', 'Can't Buy Me Love', 'Till There Was You', 'Roll Over Beethoven'.

Hari Natal 1965 George melamar Pattie Boyd, seorang model berkaki indah dan bermata biru laut. Tak lama kemudian keduanya menikah tepatnya 21 Januari 1966. Kabahagiaan perkawinan mereka sedikit terganggu gara-gara belum hadirnya momongan di rumah mereka. Kepada teman-temannya, George selalu menyatakan bahwa ada yang tidak beres dalam dirinya. namun kabar burung menyebutkan, sesungguhnya Pattie lah yang mandul dan pengakuan George hanya merupakan sikap gallant agar Pattie tidak mendapat malu. Dan memang terbukti, dari perkawinannya yang kedua di kemudian hari, ia mendapat seorang putra, Dhani.

Untuk menghindari kepusingannya, Pattie mulai menjalin cinta dengan Eric Clapton, teman dekat the Beatles. Jika George marah kepada Eric, Pattie-lah yang membelanya. Cinta itu akhirnya berkembang serius. Pada 27 Maret 1979, Eric menikahi Pattie. Sementara George menjadi binal tak terkendali. Wanita mana pun yang datang kepadanya, pasti disambarnya. Namun akhirnya ia menemukan pelabuhan hatinya, Olivia Trinidad Arias, seorang wanita berdarah Meksiko yang dinikahinya tahun 1974.

Dalam dunia percintaan George lebih banyak mengalami kegagalan walaupun akhirnya berhasil, dalam artian menemukan cinta yang tidak melulu soal seks. Sedang di bidang karir, ia banyak berhasilnya dan sekali gagal. Ketika All Things Must Pass diluncurkan, salah satu lagunya, My Sweet Lord menjadi hit. Sayang lagu itu memperlihatkan kesamaan yang sulit terbantahkan dengan lagu He's So Fine, salah satu hit dari Chiffons di awal 60-an.

Pihak produser menggugat George melakukan plagiat, dan George secara demonstratif datang ke pengadilan sambil menenteng gitarnya untuk memperlihatkan kepada hakim bagaimana ia mengarang lagu itu. Namun hakim tetap memutuskan George bersalah melakukan plagiat 'secara tidak sadar'. Bagaimanapun kejadian itu mendapat publikasi luas dari pers Inggris, sehingga secara emosional George mendapat pukulan berat.Dan pukulan ekonomis menyusul satu langkah di belakangnya, ia harus membayar denda sebesar US$ 587 ribu atau sekitar 1,25 milyar rupiah.

Terlahir dari keluarga pemusik pada 18 Juni 1942, Paul mewarisi bakat musik dari ayahnya yang pemimpin band Jim Mac Jazz sekaligus peniup terompet. Memasuki usia sekolah menengah, ia belajar di Liverpool Institute yang letaknya bersebelahan dengan Liverpool Art College tempat John belajar. Dengan demikian, kedekatan geografis menghasilkan kedekatan psikologis di antara keduanya.

Paul yang berwajah bocah dan penyayang itu akhirnya lebur dalam satu kebersamaan erat dengan John yang amoral, hedonistik dan egois, hanya karena kesamaan minat. Maka jadilah pada sore hari setelah bubaran sekolah, keduanya latihan bersama. Warna suara mereka saling melengkapi secara sempurna. Suara Paul yang manis lembut dan enak, berpadu dengan suara nasal John yang tajam.

Bersamaan dengan itu lahirlah kompetisi penulisan yang sehat diantara keduanya. John umumnya mudah membuat komposisi pada awal sebuah lagu tetapi biasanya mengalami kesulitan di bagian tengah pada saat transisi dan jeda. Paul selalu berhasil menyelesaikannya dengan baik ditambah melodi yang indah, dan terutama, pas jatuh ritmenya.

Kecemerlangan Paul sebagai komposer mulai terlihat ketika gubahannya, Yesterday, tidak saja menarik perhatian kaum muda, tetapi juga kalangan kakek nenek. Itulah satu-satunya album yang direkam dalam 2500 gambar sampul yang berbeda-beda. Namun kebersamaan Paul dalam grup, dengan John dan Yoko yang semakin nyentrik, pada akhirnya sulit dipertahankan.

Tingkah laku keduanya, yang disiarkan media cetak dan elektronik, senantiasa menimbulkan rasa jijik di hati Paul. Maka dengan membawa Linda dan anak-anak, ia pun segera minggat dari Inggris ke Skotlandia, di High Park, sebuah daerah peternakan miliknya di luar kota. Lenyapnya Paul ini tentu saja menimbulkan kegemparan di kalangan masyarakat luas. Bahkan pada 12 Oktober 1969, seorang disk jockey AS, Russ Gibb dari stasiun WKNR FM Detroit, konon telah menerima telepon dari seseorang bahwa Paul telah meninggal.

Kemudian hal ini segera dihubung-hubungkan dengan bagian akhir lagu Strawberry Fields Forever yang dinyanyikan John Lennon, yang menurut sebagian orang bunyinya adalah "I burried Paul" (walaupun Lennon justru mengatakan bunyinya bukan "I burried Paul", melainkan "cranberry sauce"). Ini sempat dianggap sebagai fakta.

Rumor lain mengatakan bahwa gambar sampul album Sergeant Pepper yang meledak di pasaran merupakan peringatan penguburan Paul, dengan para anggota The Beatles berdiri di sekeliling kuburan yang baru saja digali. Foto Paul yang terdapat di sampul itu dianggap sebagai foto aktor William Campbell, yang melakukan sejumlah bedah plastik agar terlihat sangat mirip dengan Paul.

Sementara sebuah VW bernomor polisi 28 IF, dianggap sebagai perlambang bahwa seandainya Paul masih hidup, ia berusia 28 tahun. Kenyataan bahwa saat itu ia baru berusia 27 tahun, tidak dipedulikan orang. Adalah Derek Taylor yang kemudian meyakinkan para reporter bahwa Paul masih hidup dan hanya pindah ke daerah peternakannya di Skotlandia.

Namun pernyataan ini tentu saja tidak memuaskan para penggemarnya. Majalah Life terpaksa mengirim sepasukan fotografer dan reporter ke Skotlandia untuk mendapatkan bukti konkrit bahwa Paul memang masih hidup. Dan ketika anjing penjaga rumah Paul mulai menyalak, tahulah Paul bahwa tempat persembunyiannya sudah tercium nyamuk pers.

Pada Maret 1970, hampir 7 bulan setelah kepergiannya, ia kembali ke London dengan solo albumnya: McCartney, yang antara lain berisi hits-nya Maybe I'm Amazed dan Every Night. Paul telah mengimprovisasikan berbagai efek bunyi-bunyian di studio termasuk merekam di kamar mandi dan ruang tamu untuk mendapatkan gema suara yang berbeda. Pada beberapa bagian masih sempat terdengar dentaman pintu ditutup dengan keras atau bunyi anak-anak bermain di lantai.

Begitu tiba di london dengan album barunya, Paul menelepon John. "Aku sudah melakukan apa yang kau dan Yoko sedang garap. Aku sudah menghasilkan album baru dan siap meninggalkan grup kita." John seakan-akan tidak percaya dengan apa yang dikatakan Paul, terutama bahwa ia akan meninggalkan grup. "Oke kalau begitu," John menimpali, "Itu berarti bahwa kita berdua telah menerima kenyataan tersebut, paling tidak secara mental."

Paul telah mengatakan kepada Peter Brown dan Allen Klein bahwa demi alasan pribadi ia ingin meluncurkan albumnya pada 10 April melalui studio rekaman Apple. Klein menegaskan bahwa 10 April sungguh mustahil karena pada hari itu akan diluncurkan album baru Lennon, Let It Be. Dan setelah itu pun album Ringo, Sentimental Journey sudah menunggu. Jadi album Paul harus menunggu sesudah itu. Paul lalu menelepon Ringo Starr dan memarahinya, "Gila kalian semua, apakah kalian ingin melakukan sabotase terhadapku? Lihat apa yang kalian lakukan sekarang."

Malamnya, Ringo Starr si penyabar menemui Paul di rumahnya dan mengatakan jika 10 April memang sangat penting buat Paul, maka tanggal peluncuran album miliknya akan dimundurkan, sementara Let It Be akan dimajukan. Alhasil, ketiga album itu menyerbu pasar secara susul menyusul dengan selang waktu hanya tiga atau empat minggu. Dan McCartney, albumnya Paul yang bergambar sampul sebakul buah ceri itu akhirnya diluncurkan 17 April.

Sebelumnya, 10 April, Paul mengumumkan di surat kabar apa yang telah lama hendak disampaikan John. Ia meninggalkan The Beatles karena perbedaan soal warna musik, kepribadian, dan sikap bisnis. Atau kalau mengutip buku Song of Songs,"Jangan diam kalau selarik perkataan mampu mendudukkan masalah ke posisi yang sebenarnya." Namun apakah anggota lainnya mau mendengar? Masing-masing adalah raksasa yang merasa terlalu besar untuk bisa tunduk.

Kalau di bidang musik Paul memiliki selera dan inovasi sendiri, di bidang cinta ia adalah Don Juan yang sopan. Dalam usia remaja, ganteng, hangat dan populer seperti itu, hati Paul memang dirasuki roh cinta yang beraneka warna. Dalam suatu perjalanan muhibah ke AS, Linda Eastman berusaha mendapatkan perhatiannya. Lahir tahun 1942 dan seusia Paul, Linda merupakan perpaduan wanita yang ingin hidup enak dan bernafsu menjerat pria dengan aura seksual. Tinggi, langsing, berkaki panjang ramping dengan rambut pirang, maka pas lah segala aura seks yang menjadi modalnya.

Linda secara agresif mendatangi tempat Paul, membawa tustel Nikon dan mengambil foto Paul dari berbagai sudut. Dan ketika besoknya ia mencoba menelepon Paul, tetapi tidak bisa karena semua sambungan dengan anggota The Beatles ditutup, maka foto-foto Paul diperbesar seukuran manusia dan dipajang di kamar mandi sambil ditatap setiap hari agar Paul kesayangannya jatuh lagi ke pelukannya.

Dua bulan penuh ritus menatap foto ini dilakukannya setiap hari. Perjuangan dan afeksi akhirnya membuahkan hasil dan pada 12 Maret 1969 Linda dan Paul menikah. Hadir dalam pernikahan itu antara lain Puteri Margaret dan Lord Snowdown. John dan Yoko tak sempat hadir karena sedang dalam proses menyelesaikan Unfinished Music No. 2: Life with The Lions.

Ketika The Beatles bubar, Paul McCartney dan sang istri mendirikan kelompok musik Wings. Album pertama kelompok ini, Wild Life, berhasil merenggut piringan perak.Bahkan salah satu albumnya yang diluncurkan pada 1973, Band on the Run laku terjual 6 juta kopi. Selain dengan kelompok Wings, Paul juga menjalin kerjasama dengan beberapa musisi dunia lain seperti Stevie Wonder dan Michael Jackson.

Dari musiknya, Paul meraih sukses luar biasa. Tahun 1998, Linda, sang istri tercinta meninggal akibat kanker payudara. Sekitar 3 tahun kemudian, tepatnya 11 Januari 2002, Paul menikahi Heather Mills, janda berusia 34 tahun yang mantan model. Mills yang kaki kirinya diamputasi setelah mengalami kecelakaan kendaraan di tahun 1993 ini, dikenal sebagai wanita pengusaha yang juga aktif melakukan kegiatan amal, terutama bagi korban ranjau darat.

Ketika lagu-lagu Elvis Presley meledak di sekitar tahun 50-an, John Lennon yang memiliki nama lengkap John Winston Lennon baru berusia 16 tahun. Mendengar lagu-lagu Elvis membuat hati John tergerak untuk mengikutinya. Kemudian ia membujuk ibunya untuk dibelikan sebuah gitar. Meskipun ia akhirnya hanya mendapat sebuah gitar bekas, John cukup puas. Dengan diajari ibunya, Julia, John belajar main gitar walaupun cara mengajarinya salah karena Julia memberikan pelajarannya seperti bermain banjo. Cara ini berarti menyetel lima senar teratas pada kunci G, dan membiarkan senar terbawah menjadi mubazir.

Benar atau salah cara itu, John Lennon mulai memainkan lagu Ain't That A Shame-nya Fat Domino. Beberapa waktu kemudian, gitar spanyolnya diganti dengan gitar yang lebih bagus. Pada 1957, ia membentuk bandnya yang pertama, yang disebut Black Jack. Anggotanya: John menjadi penyanyi dan gitaris, Pete Shotton pada washboard, Eric Griffiths pada gitar, Rod Davies memainkan banjo, Colin Hanton menabuh drum, dan Bill Smith memainkan bas besar. Lalu mereka mengubah nama menjadi Quarrymen, karena sebagian besar anggotanya adalah murid sekolah Quarry Bank. Band ini belakangan menjadi lebih terkenal. John bahkan memfilsafati akhir hidupnya lewat lagu The Ballad of John and Yoko. Meledaknya album-album The Beatles membuat kehadiran mereka selalu dikerumuni gadis-gadis yang "mabuk Beatles". Salah satu gadis yang mendekatinya adalah Cynthia Powell. Si pirang dari Hoylake ini memberikan John seorang putra, Julian. Dalam masa perkawinannya, ia sering ditinggal John tur keliling dunia. Bahkan ketika Julian lahir, ia tidak ditunggui John, baru seminggu kemudian ditengok. Itu pun tidak lama, karena John harus pergi kembali bersama grupnya.

Memang, akhirnya perkawinan mereka berlangsung tidak lebih dari 5 tahun, gara-gara masuknya Yoko Ono, seniman avant garde, dalam kehidupan John lennon. kedekatan mereka selama setahun praktis lebih didorong oleh semangat intelektual. kesamaan jiwa seni dan visi intelektual itulah yang menjadi tali pengikat emosional keduanya. Kalau Yoko mengadakan pameran seni, John dengan setia menjadi sponsornya. dengan semakin dekatnya Yoko di hati John, maka jarak emosional yang memisahkannya dengan Cynthia menjadi semakin lebar. Itu pula sebabnya pada November 1968, John memberikan 100 ribu poundsterling kepada Cynthia sebagai uang selamat jalan. Dari uang itu Cynthia menggunakan 25 ribu pound untuk membeli sebuah rumah yang dihuninya bersama ibunya dan Julian, putranya.

Dosa 'Si Muka Pucat' belum berhenti di situ. Kehidupannya di masa lampau yang kocar-kacir ikut-ikutan menjerumuskan John menjadi pemakai obat bius. Untunglah hal ini kurang diketahui publik. Namun detektif Inggris sudah lama mencium hal ini. Akhirnya seekor anjing pelacak mendengus-dengus di kantong teropong Lennon. Polisi segera menemukan marijuana. Jumlah yang lebih banyak segera diketemukan dalam sebuah tustel tua. Pemandangan yang menyedihkan, ketika John dan Yoko digiring keluar menuju mobil tahanan polisi, barisan fotografer langsung membidikkan kameranya dari segala sudut.

Tanpa mempedulikan insiden kecil ini, keduanya mulai bekerja dan beberapa waktu kemudian meluncurkan album pertama, hasil kerjasama antara keduanya, Unfinished Music No.1-Two Virgins. Yang mengejutkan adalah gambar sampul yang memperlihatkan buah dada Yoko yang terjela-jela ke lantai studio dan, maaf, penis John Lennon yang menjulang menembus awan telihat jelas tidak disunat. Jadi rupanya itulah yang dimaksudkan dengan two virgins tadi, satu perjaka dan satu dara, dengan organ vital yang dipajang, siap dilempar ke masyarakat. Album ini meledak di pasaran. Bahkan di New Jersey, Amerika Serikat, ketika polisi mencoba membendung 30 ribu kopi rekaman yang siap dilempar, terbukti mereka terlambat. Penjualannya jauh lebih cepat dari yang mereka duga. Dan tornado histeria massa pun menyapu seluruh wilayah sekitarnya.

Pada 20 Maret 1969, hanya delapan hari setelah perkawinan Paul dan Linda, John dan Yoko pun bersicepat mengurus perkawinan. Yoko baru saja menerima surat cerai dari Tony Cos pada 2 Februari. (Jadi kumpul kebo sebelumnya antara John dan Yoko dinilai sebagai berani karena perkeboan sudah terjadi ketika status Yoko masih sebagai istri orang lain). Duabelas tahun Yoko berbagi keedanan bersama John, hingga pada 8 Desember 1980 ketika semua kegilaan, sikap nyentrik, nafsu mencipta yang menggelegak itu dihentikan Mark David Chapman dengan lima tembakan peluru. Waktu John dan Yoko baru tiba di Dakota sehabis rekaman pada pukul 10.50 malam, Chapman sudah siap menghadangnya. Tepat ketika John dan Yoko keluar dari limousine terdengar ada suara memanggil, "Mr. John!". John menoleh, mencoba melihat ke dalam gelap. Lima langkah di depannya, Chapman sudah memegang senapan dengan laras terkokang.

Lima peluru beruntun menembus badan John, dengan akibat, 80 persen darahnya tumpah dari leher dan bahu. Hasilnya, tak peduli beapa pun canggihnya peralatan Rumah Sakit Roosevelt, tak peduli betapa pun telatennya para perawat dan dr. Stephen Lynn, semuanya tak mampu mengembalikan nyawa John yang segera terbang ke padang perburuan abadi. Pada tanggal 26 Oktober 1965, The Beatles dianugerahi gelar kebangsawanan MBE (Member of British Empire) oleh Ratu Elizabeth di Istana Buckingham, London. Tapi penganugerahan gelar kepada the beatles ini disambut protes dari sejumlah publik figur yang mendapat gelar sama, terutama dari kalangan militer dan pahlawan perang. Malah ada yang mengembalikan medali MBE ke istana sebagai bentuk protes.

Pada tanggal 24 Juli 1967, The Times, media massa Inggris, menerbitkan sebuah artikel yang isinya cukup mengejutkan publik luas. Pada artikel ditulis kalau keempat personil The Beatles dan manajer mereka, Brian Epstein, mendukung petisi untuk melegalkan penggunaan mariyuana (semacam narkotika). Terutama setelah kematian tragis menimpa manajer sekaligus sahabat mereka paling dekat, Brian Epstein. Kesulitan yang dialami The Beatles lantaran mereka nggak siap me-"manage" karir band sendiri.

Tanggal 1 September 1967, atau tepatnya 5 hari setelah kematian Brian Epstein, keempat personil The Beatles berkumpul di rumah Paul McCartney yang terletak di kawasan St. John's Wood, untuk membahas masa depan band. Cuma masalah yang dibahas pada pertemuan ini adalah soal pembuatan film "Magical Mystery Tour" yang berasal dari ide Paul McCartney. Pada pertemuan ini sempet muncul pertikaian antara John dan Paul, lantaran belum ada skrip yang jelas soal film ini. Inilah awal dari perseteruan antara dua tokoh utama The Beatles.

Pada bulan Februari 1968, tiga personil The Beatles, John, Paul, dan George pergi ke India untuk belajar meditasi dibawah bimbingan Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Meditasi ini berakhir pada bulan Maret 1968. Meditasi ini harus dipersingkat lantaran ada rumor yang tidak beres soal guru mereka tadi. Isu yang beredar adalah Maharishi berusaha memperkosa teman seperjalanan mereka, Mia Farrow.

Bulan Mei 1968, perpecahan dalam tubuh The Beatles mulai senter. Diawali dengan keinginan John dan Paul untuk menjadi pemimpin, menggantikan Brian Epstein. Tapi masalah ini berkembang besar setelah John sering ngajak Yoko Ono, pacar barunya, menghadiri sesi rekaman The Beatles di studio Abbey Road. Padahal para personil The Beatles pernah sepakat untuk tidak mengajak pacar atau istrinya selama proses rekaman. Pada tahun 1969, para personil The Beatles mulai melakukan kegiatan masing-masing dan nggak peduli lagi soal karir band. John sibuk dengan kegiatan aktivis perdamaiannya, Paul mulai bersolo karir, Ringo sibuk pengen jadi bintang film, George sibuk bikin musik bareng sahabatnya, Eric Clapton. Paul sempet memutuskan untuk menjadi pemersatu The Beatles sebagai pimpinan. Tapi ide ini ditolak oleh tiga personil lainnya. Puncaknya George mengumumkan pengunduran dirinya pada tahun tersebut.

Tanggal 13 September 1969 jadi hari kelabu untuk The Beatles saat John Lennon ngeluarin "statement" resminya, keluar dari The Beatles. "Statement" ini diucapkan saat perjalanan tur Plastic Ono Band ke Toronto, Kanada. Lantas pada medio Februari 1970, giliran Paul McCartney yang bikin "statemen" cabut dari The Beatles. "Statement" ini langsung disampaikan kepada John Lennon. Akhirnya pada tanggal 10 April 1970, Paul mengumumkan secara resmi kalau The Beatles bubar. John merasa kesal dengan pengumuman resmi Paul ini, pasalnya dia merasa keduluan.

Sadly, internal tension resurfaced in the Beatles when Allen Klein brought in Phil Spector to produce and overdub Get Back (released in May 1970 as Let It Be) against Paul's wishes, also demanding that Paul delay the release of McCartney, his solo debut, in order to avoid detracting from sales of Let It Be.

In anger, McCartney released his album in April, before Let It Be, and publicly announced that he was quitting the group. On December 31, 1970 McCartney filed suit against Klein to break up the Beatles, which upset the other three, who had considered periodically recording as a group while continuing their solo careers -- now any chance of a reunion was gone, at least for quite a while. Apple Records became a financial and legal mess.

During the 1970s each of the Beatles released solo albums. McCartney, performing with wife Linda in the group Wings, was the most commercially successful; Lennon recorded on and off with Yoko Ono, and continued to attract attention for his radical politics (though he semi-retired from music in 1975 to spend time with his newborn son, Sean).

Throughout the decade there was idle talk of a reunion, peaking around 1976 when a Beatlesque Australian group named Klaatu was rumored to be the Fab Four under a false name (they weren't, though their manager and record company encouraged speculation) and Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels half-seriously offered the Beatles $3,000 to perform on his show.

Though all four Beatles did contribute to the 1973 Ring Starr song "I'm the Greatest," no genuine reunion ever took place. On December 8, 1980 all chances of that happening were ended when deranged fan Mark David Chapman shot and killed John Lennon outside his New York apartment.

Although the Beatles had not released any new albums since 1970, interest in the group remained high into the '90s, their backcatalog selling millions of copies a year and providing Capitol with a large percentage of its annual income.

Publishing rights to all Lennon-McCartney compositions were sold during the '80s for hundreds of millions of dollars, at one point passing through the hands of Michael Jackson. Though Capitol issued singles/out-takes compilations such as Past Masters and Rarities,a lot more unreleased material remained unavailable due to ongoing legal problems, and ended up on illegal bootlegs.

By the early '90s Paul, George, Ringo and Yoko Ono settled their contractual disagreements, permitting the re-release of long unavailable recordings. In 1994 Capitol issued a double CD of early Beatles recordings for the BBC. Phenomenal sales of Live at the BBC inspired more exploitation of the Beatles legacy.

In 1995 the surviving Beatles came together to contribute to a TV documentary about the group and select material for a planned rarities anthology of out-takes and demos. While together, Paul, George and Ringo laid down music for two John Lennon demo out-takes, "Free as a Bird" and "Real Love."

Though the sound quality was often abysmal, the material inferior, and the surrounding hype insulting, America's aging populace ate up the three 1996 double-album releases, Beatles Anthology 1, 2, and 3, which sold over 15 million copies in less than a year.

On August 27, 1967 Beatles manger Brian Epstein was found dead of a drug overdose, possibly intentional. The band was shaken, but decided not to hire a new manager, assuming complete control over their own career. Their first project without Epstein's guidance, the concept album and BBC TV special Magical Mystery Tour, was attacked by critics, and perhaps was the beginning of the end for the Beatles.

By 1968 the group had formed its own record label, Apple, and was recording tracks for a new double album. Sessions were filled with tension as members of the group stormed out periodically and often failed to record together, turning in tracks recorded independently. The often bizarre result, popularly referred to as The White Album but officially called The Beatles, was released in November of 1968, and featured a guest appearance by Eric Clapton on the single "While My Guitar Gently Weeps."

That same month John Lennon released a solo album recorded with his controversial new lover, Japanese-American artist Yoko Ono, entitled Unfinished Music No. 1 - Two Virgins.Late in 1968 an animated film inspired by the song "Yellow Submarine" was released in theaters. Despite the cheery tone of the film, created with little band involvement, the real Beatles were hardly speaking, spending more time on their personal lives and own musical projects than on the group.

In January 1969 the weary band began preparing to record a new album live in the studio, without any overdubs, tentatively entitled Get Back. For an accompanying film, the Beatles performed on the roof of their studio, their last public appearance ever. While preparing the album, the group began to fight over creative issues, and the project was shelved amid many bad feelings. On March 12, McCartney married American photographer Linda Eastman; several days later Lennon formally married Yoko Ono.

By May the Beatles' situation worsened when the group appointed Allen Klein as their new business manager, despite objections by Paul McCartney, who wanted to give the job to his new father-in-law. Though conflict continued to plague the group, the Beatles returned one last time to EMI Studios to record Abbey Road with George Martin, an amazingly cohesive album.

By early 1970 each of the four Beatles was working on a solo album, but each publicly denied rumors of a split. In September 1969, Lennon told his bandmates that he wanted to quit, but because the group was renegotiating with EMI at the time, the breakup was temporarily put aside. Meanwhile, rampant rumors spread across America that Paul McCartney had died in an auto accident several years earlier and had been secretly replaced by a look-alike; the alleged "clues" hidden in lyrics and cover art were quickly proved to be the product of overactive imaginations.

Not content with their unprecedented commercial success, the Beatles began to take their music more seriously, shifting from covers and upbeat pop love songs to more introspective, experimental material, highlighted on December 1965's Rubber Soul. The next U.S. Beatles album, Yesterday...And Today, was released on June 15, 1966 and featured a shocking cover featuring the handsome Fab Four surrounded by raw meat and butchered baby dolls, a protest against Capitol's "butchery" of their albums in the U.S. market.

Complaints from retailers immediately rolled in, and the album was withdrawn, reissued the following week with a new, mundane cover of a steamer trunk. (Today copies of the album with the original cover are worth thousands of dollars.) Further controversy plagued the group when John Lennon claimed in a newspaper interview that the Beatles were "more popular than Jesus."

Many radio stations stopped playing their songs, and protesters appeared outside their concerts. Meanwhile the group was increasingly under the influence of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, an Indian guru; this flirtation with Eastern religion soon became common among '60s rock stars, and, more interestingly, lead the Beatles to experiment with Indian sitar music on their next few albums. The band also began using copious amounts of psychedelic drugs, foreshadowing the "flower children" of the next few years.

Following the release of Revolver, their most mature effort to date, in August 1966, the Beatles embarked on their final U.S. tour, playing their last live show at San Francisco's Candlestick Park on August 29th. Henceforth, the band announced, they were going to eschew live performances to concentrate on more elaborate studio recordings.

Rumors of a breakup were spread in the media as the band disappeared from the public. The Beatles spent much of early 1967 in the studio, recording their magnum opus, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. This groundbreaking concept album completely changed the way rock albums created: it used numerous studio effects, placed the emphasis on the album as a whole rather than on singles, and rewrote the standard for cover art with its famous mannequin-based photo collage.Sgt. Pepper's later won four Grammys, including Best Album.

Naturally, word about this amazing new act soon spread to America. Yet, ignoring the British success of the Fab Four, EMI's U.S. partner, Capitol, declined to issue the first few Beatles singles, which were instead picked up by the Chicago-based indie label Vee Jay Records. Vee Jay packaged the early singles as Introducing the Beatles, their first U.S. LP.

During the second half of 1963 it was the only Beatles material available in America, and sold incredibly well; by 1964 a court awarded the rights to all Beatles recordings to EMI/Capitol, and the record went out of print, only to become one of the most counterfeited albums in music history.

In January of 1964 Capitol released their first U.S. Beatles LP, Meet the Beatles, containing remixed material from their two British albums. Following a landmark three- weekend stint on the Ed Sullivan show in February of 1964 (viewed by over 73 million people), the Beatles were the biggest band in America -- "Beatlemania" had taken hold of the U.S., also paving the way for other "British Invasion" groups.

To capitalize on their incredible popularity, the Fab Four were made the stars of a comedy film, A Hard Days Night, which, surprisingly, earned good reviews and, not surprisingly, spawned a hit soundtrack album. Following the release of the movie in July, the band embarked on their first North American tour, performing 25 stadium dates in the U.S. and Canada.

By the end of the year Beatles For Sale was in British stores, part of EMI's plan to have a new Beatles album out every six months, while their previous albums and singles still clogged the U.S. and U.K Top 10. In 1965 the band appeared in a second movie, the James Bond spoof Help!,which also spawned a soundtrack album. Another huge U.S. tour followed.

Throughout 1961 the Beatles played clubs in Britain, becoming an underground sensation; they were particularly famous at the Cavern Club in their native city of Liverpool. Though they played mostly covers, Lennon and McCartney began writing original songs together, agreeing to forever share songwriting credits, even though they only co-wrote a handful of tunes during their entire career as the Beatles.

By the end of that year, Liverpool record store owner Brian Epstein had become the band's manager, and quickly began trying to find them a record contract. On January 1, 1962 the Beatles auditioned for Decca Records, performing 12 covers and three originals for A&R assistant Mike Smith. The group was rejected, however, and told that "guitar groups are on the way out." Undaunted, Epstein got the group an audition at Parlophone, an EMI subsidiary, with producer George Martin, who signed the Beatles on May 9, 1962.

After one recording session, Martin suggested that drummer Pete Best be replaced, and the Beatles brought in Ringo Starr (born Richard Starkey), a well-known local drummer, as his replacement. By October 1962 their first single, "Love Me Do" b/w "P.S. I Love You," was a U.K. Top 20 hit, allegedly because Epstein bought 10,000 copies himself to ensure that it would chart. The band began regular guest spots on the BBC, performing over fifty times between 1962 and 1964.

In February of 1963 the Beatles returned to the studio to record 10 songs (in one day!) for their first album, Please Please Please Me, which was released the following month. It became an instant hit, staying at No. 1 in Britain for 30 weeks and by October, female fans were screaming at their performances -- the start of "Beatlemania." Following an early November performance before the royal family, Parlophone released a second Beatles album, With The Beatles. By the end of the year the group had sold over 2.5 million albums in Britain, and had a string of million-selling singles.

Probably the most popular, influential and enduring rock group of all time, the Beatles almost single-handedly reshaped rock 'n' roll from a genre of throwaway singles by faceless stars to an artistic medium with recognizable images and idols. The Beatles placed the emphasis on a group, rather than a single individual (like Frank Sinatra or Elvis).

They also set an example for all rock acts to follow with their strong sense of self-determination, going against their record company and management on many issues, even refusing to tour at the height of their popularity. Their countless hit singles have become modern-day folk songs, covered by hundreds of individuals and groups and inspiring countless more, and have sold more copies than those of any other band in history.

The roots of the Beatles date back to Liverpool, England in the late 1950s. Inspired by the growing British skiffle craze, John Lennon bought a guitar in March 1957 and formed a skiffle group called the Quarrymen, named after his high school, Quarry Bank. The lineup changed frequently, but by October 1959 it consisted of Lennon, his younger classmate Paul McCartney, George Harrison and drummer Colin Hanton.

By March of 1960, Lennon's art school classmate Stuart Sutcliffe joined the band on bass and suggested the name the Beetles, a response to Buddy Holly's group the Crickets. By that summer they were the Silver Beatles, settling on the Beatles in August. That month the Beatles departed for Hamburg, West Germany, with their new drummer Pete Best, to try to establish themselves in Europe. The band became a popular local act, performing at various clubs until they were expelled from the country in November because George Harrison was underage.

The Beatles returned to Germany in early 1961 to record as a backup band for singer Tony Sheridan; these sessions were later released during the mid-'60s as "new" Beatles material, taking advantage of unsuspecting fans. Meanwhile Sutcliffe had left the band to pursue his art career, with McCartney taking over on bass. Sutcliffe died of a brain hemorrhage the following year.

Album-album baru yang dirilis - meski berupa kompilasi - tetap saja laku di pasaran. Bahkan cerita soal band dan para personilnya terus digulirkan media massa demi meraih keuntungan.

Cikal bakal The Beatles adalah nama band sekolah bentukan John Lennon. Butuh bandnya jadi legendaris, beberapa kali bandnya mengalami perubahan nama.

Nama The Beatles berasal dari ide John Lennon. Nama ini sebenarnya nggak punya makna yang spesifik. Malah menurut yang ngasih ide, nama band ini nggak lebih dari sekedar becandaan saja. Pasalnya didapat dari hasil permainan kata-kata, yaitu nama serangga (beetle atau kumbang) digabung dengan beat (gaya musik yang dimainkan).

The Beatles tenar lebih dulu di Jerman daripada di Inggris, lantaran karir mereka diawali dengan bermain di klub-klub di Jerman. Sehingga sewaktu The Beatles mulai bermain di klub-klub di kota Liverpool, banyak yang menyangka kalau mereka adalah orang-orang Jerman. Apalagi poster konsernya bertuliskan : The Beatles, Direct from Hamburg. The Beatles mulai bermain di klub-klub di Jerman, atau tepatnya di kota Hamburg, pada bulan Agustus 1960.

Sukses cukup besar diraih di Jerman, terbukti dari selalu penuhnya klub-klub tiap kali mereka tampil. Sukses The Beatles bikin iri klub-klub yang awalnya menolak menampilkan mereka dan berusaha menjegal langkah The Beatles. Entah bagaimana caranya, mereka berhasil membuat working permit The Beatles dicabut secara mendadak dan seluruh personil dideportasi keluar Jerman.

Pil penambah tenaga atau doping, mulai digunakan para personil The Beatles saat main di klub-klub di Jerman. Mereka terpaksa menggunakan obat-obatan supaya selalu fit tiap kali manggung, apalagi mereka harus tampil 6 hari seminggu selama 8 jam. Belakangan kebiasaan menggunakan doping membuat mereka terlibat dalam penggunaan narkotika dan obat-obatan terlarang lainnya.

Pada awal tahun '60-an, The Beatles adalah satu-satunya band di Inggris yang tampil dengan gaya urakan dan sembarangan. Ditambah lagi permainan musik yang lebih keras daripada musisi lain. The Beatles terlihat aneh dengan penampilan ini lantaran gaya yang jadi ciri rock 'n roll itu sudah ditinggalkan musisi Inggris dan mulai tampil rapi. The Beatles nggak tahu adanya perubahan ini, pasalnya sebelum itu mereka lagi sibuk nge-band di Jerman.

Setiap kali selesai manggung pada masa-masa tahun 1961 (era Cavern), para personil The Beatles selalu terlibat dalam perselisihan. Bukan berselisih soal pembagian hasil manggung, tapi karena rebutan pengen jadi supir mobil. Nggak heran, pasalnya di dalam mobil yang sempit mereka harus berdesak-desakan pula dengan instrumen musik. Jadinya buat mendapatkan tempat yang paling enak didalam mobil menurut mereka adalah dengan menjadi supir.

Fenomena Beatlemania

"She loves you, yeah yeah yeah...!" Itulah teriakan yang menggema diantara hebohnya jingkrak-jingkrak serta sibakan rambut mop top (poni) khas The Beatles. Mungkin Anda berkata, " Ah, itu sih dulu, tahun 60-an." Eh, ternyata nggak juga. Sampai saat ini teriakan itu tetap bergema. Beatlemania tidak pernah pudar, termasuk di tanah air.

Petikan syair lagu tadi memang milik kelompok The Beatles, sebuah kelompok musik asal Liverpool, Inggris. Ada hal menarik untuk dicermati. Eksistensi mereka ternyata tidak berakhir seiring dengan bubarnya kelompok tersebut di tahun 1970. Tidak juga ketika John Lennon sang pentolan kelompok itu meninggal Desember 1980. Lantas, kekuatan apa gerangan yang membuat mereka begitu perkasa dan abadi?

Iseng-iseng saya membuka-buka koleksi majalah lama. Di majalahTempo edisi 10 Januari 1987 saya menemukan artikel berjudul "Umat Beatles Dimana-mana". Di situ tertulis cerita tentang "Beatles Melayu" bernama Bharata Band yang melakukan konser di Senayan. Saat itu pertunjukan berakhir dengan kerusuhan serta kerusakan berat gara-gara histeria penonton. Itu baru Beatles pura-pura. Bayangkan apa yang akan terjadi kalau itu The Beatles sungguhan! Dan perlu dicatat, itu terjadi 17 tahun setelah The Beatles bubar!

Penikmat lagu-lagu The Beatles memang bejibun dan ada dimana-mana di seantero jagat. Tak heran kalau bermunculan duplikat-duplikat The Beatles yang khusus membawakan lagu-lagu mereka, dan laku! Di Jerman ada kelompok band yang menamakan diri Beatlemania. Di Belanda ada Stefano Sanders alias Bas Muys (lahir 14 oktober 1976) Dia menyanyikan lagu2 karya Lennon/McCartney antara lain From a Window, I Don’t Wanna See You Again, Step Inside Love dll. Penyanyi ini gabung juga di band 'Stars of 45', spesialis lagu-lagu legend dengan aransemen ulang, kadang2 jg di medley (yg ada beat nya pake suara tepuk tangan, kayak lagu untuk senam jaman dulu). Lagu2 yang dia nyanyikan, versi aslinya ada di album 'Songs of Lennon/Mc Cartney never issued'

Di Indonesia sendiri bertebaran kelompok-kelompok semacam itu. Bharata, band asal Jakarta adalah salah satunya. Di Bandung, tercatat ada kelompok Mat Bitel dan Silver Beat (dua-duanya sudah vakum). Belum lagi kelompok- kelompok lainnya seperti OldCrack, Root, Flower Beat, Cavern Beat, yang juga berada di jalur yang sama.

Ketika album kompilasi bertajuk Anthology dirilis, sambutan masyarakat di seluruh dunia ternyata begitu antusias. Demikian juga halnya ketika album Live at BBC dilempar ke pasaran. Di Bandung, jika Anda rajin memutar-mutar gelombang radio, Anda akan menemukan bahwa ada radio-radio tertentu yang memiliki program khusus lagu-lagu The Beatles. Di acara tersebut, selain tentu saja diputar lagu-lagu The Beatles, juga dibahas berbagai hal yang berkaitan dengan The Beatles, bahkan sampai hal-hal yang kecil. Misalnya, bagaimana nama Martha dalam lagu Martha My Dear bukanlah nama orang seperti yang selama ini disangka orang, melainkan nama seekor anjing kesayangan Paul McCartney. Yang agak mengherankan adalah kenyataan bahwa pendengar acara-acara tersebut kebanyakan adalah anak-anak muda yang notabene tidak pernah menjamani masa kejayaan The Beatles.

Keheranan yang sama pernah saya alami secara langsung. Suatu ketika, saya dan teman-teman diundang nyanyi di acara parade band alternatif. Anda bisa bayangkan bahwa yang hadir di sana sebagian besar adalah anak muda. Ternyata ketika kami membawakan lagu-lagu "kolot", mereka ikut bergoyang dan dengan fasih menyebutkan judul-judul lagu The Beatles. Paling tidak, nomor-nomor "top forty" (menurut istilah teman saya) semacam Hey Jude, Revolution, Please Mr. Postman, Obladi-Oblada dll, ternyata mereka kenal dengan baik.

Dari fakta-fakta yang saya paparkan tadi, barangkali kita bisa menarik benang merah yang secara otomatis menafikan asumsi bahwa pendengar lagu-lagu The Beatles adalah kelompok "tua" yang sejaman dengan The Beatles dan sekedar ingin bernostalgia. Yang jadi pertanyaan sekarang adalah apa yang sesungguhnya "mengikat" penikmat lagu-lagu The Beatles "generasi masa kini" dengan "kelompok masa lalu"?

Dulu, Tato Bharata dan kawan-kawan mengaku sulit untuk memahami fenomena tersebut. Dan sekarang pun, kita ternyata masih mengalami kesulitan yang sama. Yang jelas, The Beatles tetap eksis sejak dulu hingga sekarang, dan bahkan mungkin juga di masa yang akan datang. Entah sampai kapan. Mengingat fenomena luar biasa ini, tak berlebihan kiranya jika para beatlemania di seluruh dunia dengan penuh ketulusan dan kecintaan berteriak, "We love you..yeah..yeah.. yeah..!!"

Sang Legenda Musik Dunia

The Beatles adalah sebuah simbol pemberontakan terhadap kemapanan musikal, yang anehnya tidak terasa vulgar. Mereka adalah ikon yang menjadi tonggak dalam perjalanan musik dunia. Peran mereka sungguh tidak bisa dipandang sebelah mata.

Dalam perjalanan karir yang cukup singkat, The Beatles telah berhasil memposisikan diri mereka di jajaran atas musisi dunia, yang lagu-lagunya nyaris abadi. Sampai sekarang, penggemar mereka selalu ada di setiap generasi. Fakta itulah yang mendorong saya untuk mempersembahkan blog ini bagi siapa pun yang suka dengan The Beatles di mana pun Anda berada.
